Install Community
Create a separate learning vault with Starter Kit 1.2.0, then validate the installation.
Goal and prerequisites
Install Community 1.0.0 using Starter Kit 1.2.0 into an empty or missing folder. Have Windows PowerShell 5.1 or 7, or Bash and Python 3.10+. For Pro, use the Pro guide.
1. Download and inspect the package
Open the Starter Kit 1.2.0 release and download kos-starter-kit-v1.2.0.zip. Extract it into a package folder separate from your target vault. Inspect the release’s checksum and files before running scripts.
Expected ZIP SHA-256:
e10f61d5b0f2b3800796fc2cdf5c923cbc589a8e0917afb41cf6f9bd6651c9fa
2. Prepare answers
From the extracted folder, copy installer/answers.example.json to installer/answers.json. Edit your profile, timezone and installation.providers. Supported provider values are codex, claude and gemini. Keep Git initialization and initial commit off for this learning exercise.
Copy-Item -LiteralPath './installer/answers.example.json' -Destination './installer/answers.json'
On Bash:
cp installer/answers.example.json installer/answers.json
3. Preview, then apply
The target below is a sibling learning vault. Check the plan’s resolved target and proposed files before approval.
./install.ps1 -Answers './installer/answers.json' -Target '../KOS-Learning' -Operation new -DryRun
./install.ps1 -Answers './installer/answers.json' -Target '../KOS-Learning' -Operation new -Approve
./install.ps1 -Target '../KOS-Learning' -Operation validate
Or use Bash:
bash install.sh --answers installer/answers.json --target ../KOS-Learning --operation new --dry-run
bash install.sh --answers installer/answers.json --target ../KOS-Learning --operation new --approve
bash install.sh --target ../KOS-Learning --operation validate
Expected result
The new vault contains the chosen workspace profile, root instructions and selected adapter files. The package installs Community 1.0.0 with Core contract 1.0.0; it does not install Pro or an AI provider application.
Verify and recover
Read the validation result and 00 - System/Installation/Runs/<run-id>/report.md. Open representative notes before proceeding. If the target is nonempty, stop and choose a fresh directory or the appropriate existing-vault path. Do not force a global overwrite.
Keep the extracted package for maintenance. If an apply is interrupted, consult troubleshooting and the run journal before retrying.
